Design Dance is seeking a Drama Teacher and Director to facilitate our annual theatre partnership with a Montessori school. We are a for purpose, mission-driven business seeking a passionate instructor with an expert understanding of theatrical processes and performances.

Design Dance was founded in 2008 out of a drive to bring dance and the arts to students throughout the Chicagoland area through unique, collaborative partnerships with schools and community centers. Our programming is designed to build courage, connection and self-awareness through innovative curriculum, a dedicated teaching staff and a commitment to meeting the needs of the communities we serve. Each student, regardless of ability level, is empowered to better express themselves and share stories through movement, performance and collaboration.

About You

The Drama Teacher and Director is responsible for overseeing the creation, production and performance of our school partner’s annual musical for students ages 5-12 years old.

The Drama Teacher and Director must have experience working with a wide-range of students in the drama setting, as well as, experience directing, choreographing and overseeing the final production of various theatrical performances. The Drama Teacher and Director will collaborate on the drafting and finalization of an original script, assign student roles, coach individuals and groups through rehearsals, and oversee the production and final performance.

The Design Dance team is positive, solutions-oriented and collaborative.  An ideal instructor will bring an eagerness to work with multiple stakeholders, innovative ideas, enthusiasm for youth development, and a positive energy to this role.

The Drama Teacher and Director must be available for weekly after school classes/meetings starting in March 2019, as well as, full day rehearsals for one week at the end of May 2019 or the start of June 2019.

Responsibilities Include:

1. Educate students about theatre and performance

  • Teach basic theatre and performance etiquette

  • Use creative improv games as education tools

  • Coach students as they navigate their roles

  • Creatively engage students in the theatrical process

  • Maintain proper control and oversight of student groups

2. Collaborate and oversee theatrical production

  • Assist in the conceptualization and writing of an original script

  • Collaborate with various stakeholders on the script, stage design, set, costumes, props and sound (including working with a music director)

  • Assign roles and coach students through the acting process

  • Stage the production and choreograph the musical numbers

  • Oversee rehearsals, dress rehearsals and the final production for families
