The Moving Literature residency aims to expose students to character, emotion and plot within literary texts that inspire movement exploration. Using a piece of literature of the classroom teacher's choice, our teaching artist guides students through an experience of self-exploration and collaboration within the arts, connecting story components to movement choices. Students will gain exposure to primary dance styles such as ballet, hip hop, jazz and tap, explore the dance elements of Body, Action, Space, Time and Energy, and find connections to literary elements such as theme, tone, action, and word choice within the chosen work of literature. The program culminates with a final presentation of the student-created work.

They learn about the occasions for which these dances are performed and their cultural-historical significance. Then they build teamwork skills through partner dances and small group exercises, and confidence through large group improvisation. Each participating classroom performs in a International Day at the end of the residency, showcasing their mastery of the cultural dance and their own dance fusion incorporating original movement.
