Johanna Thompson

Johanna has been dancing since the age of 2 and has loved dance for as long as she can remember.  She began her training at Brockport School of Dance and Performing Arts in NY and took classes there through childhood and her teenage years.  She has attended Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet's summer intensive two years as a student and one as an RA.  After high-school, she decided to continue her dance education at a private liberal arts university called Alma College in Alma, MI.  During her four years at Alma, Johanna took regular ballet technique classes, various modern, jazz, and tap technique classes, and was a member of the Alma College Dance Company.  The company performed three times a year, and Johanna was also involved with several performance opportunities outside the company.  Her studies at Alma also included Dance History, Choreography, Creative Movement for Children, and Yoga.  In addition to dancing and performing, she also choreographed two pieces for the annual Student Choreographers Concert.  She graduated in April 2009 with a BA in Dance from Alma College.  Her favorite styles are Modern and Ballet, and she loves to take an African class when she gets a chance.

Johanna is thrilled to be teaching at Design Dance and views every class as an opportunity not only for her students to learn from her, but for her to learn from her students.

Goals for the future include starting her own dance school and becoming more involved with giving dance a presence in her local community.

Her mission as a dance teacher: "To encourage and inspire an awareness of the body through the exploration of movement and the practice of technique, and to grow in all my students an appreciation for movement as a form of self-expression, communication, and art."

In her free time, aside from dancing, Johanna loves to knit, crochet, read, play guitar, and enjoy nature.
