Design Dance's Cultural Dance residency integrates social studies and dance, while building literacy, reading comprehension, character development, confidence, and empathy. Students explore folk tales from around the world while learning folk dances from the geographical areas of study. They learn about the occasions for which these dances are performed and their cultural-historical significance. Then they build teamwork skills through partner dances and small group exercises, and confidence through large group improvisation. Each participating classroom performs in a International Day at the end of the residency, showcasing their mastery of the cultural dance and their own dance fusion incorporating original movement.

Grades: K-12
